Public Allies

We provide young leaders of the Twin Cities with great opportunities inNon-Profit Leadership. For 18 years, Public Allies has expanded thecapacity of the nation's not-for-profit sector through its AmeriCorps Ally Apprenticeship Program. Public Allies launched a brand-new site in Minnesota last fall with operating partner Pillsbury United Communities. Through this program, we identify "Allies"— diverse, energetic, enthusiastic and ambitious young adults who want to make an impact in communities through performing direct service at organizations. During their 10-month Apprenticeship, Allies work four days per week, full-time, at "Partner Organizations," and also participate in weekly training and perform neighborhood service projects.

UW River Falls will be having its annual African Night Friday Feb 11th. from 7pm-12am.

National Student Exchange
A network of nearly 200 U.S. and Canadian colleges and universities. Students can go on exchange for a semester or a year to another school in the U.S., Puerto Rico, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Canada! NSE is AFFORDABLE! Most students pay U of M tuition while on exchange and most financial aid applies. There are many reasons to participate in NSE:

Study at a more diverse school (there are many Historically Black Colleges and Universities as well as Latino Serving Institutions that participate).
Live in a different geographic location (like Hawaii, Maine, US Virgin Islands, Alaska, and many places in between!)
Gain access to different courses and faculty at another school. You can choose from approximately 550 majors/minors!
Evaluate a school you might attend later for graduate studies.
Research another job market and network or look for jobs there.
Pursue internship opportunities outside of Minnesota.
Pursue language study (improve your Spanish at a school in Puerto Rico or work on your French at a school in Quebec!)
Grow personally, academically, and professionally!

Dance Marathon

“Dance Marathon is a 12 hour dance-a-thon in which participants
raise money and support for children and families affected by
HIV/AIDS and other isolating circumstances. The event will be
held Saturday March 5th 2011, from 10am-10pm in the Radisson
Ballroom. Dance Marathon will feature live music, deejays and
a multitude of entertainers to inspire our dedicated dancers.
Hundreds of enthusiastic college students, alumni and faculty
will be dancing their hearts out for children affected by
HIV/AIDS. Each dancer raises at least $100 and is challenged
to stay on their feet for the entire event!”

Breakthrough St Paul

Join the Tutor Corps at Breakthrough Saint Paul! Breakthrough Saint Paul is expanding our corps of tutors to call upon when our 7th-12th grade students need extra academic support during the 2010-2011 school year. We are seeking tutors for math, science, reading, and writing. Tutors will be paired with students based on student needs, geographical compatibility, and tutor areas of expertise. Tutors and students will meet at a mutually selected public location, ideally the student¹s school or a Saint Paul Public Library. Tutors are asked to make a 2 hour/week commitment for a period of 3 months. Tutors are also required to attend a training scheduled for January 29th, 2011 in order to begin tutoring in February.

“The Institute for Responsible Citizenship is now accepting applications for the Class of 2012. Each summer, the Institute hosts a summer leadership program for talented African American male college sophomores in Washington, DC. Our students work at high-level internships, take a challenging course in economics and government, and meet with influential leaders. We accept students of all disciplines, and encourage students majoring in the sciences, business, entrepreneurship, and engineering to apply.”

Northwestern University Center for Global Engagement

“Credit-bearing study abroad and experiential learning program called the Global Engagement Summer Institute (GESI). GESI begins at Northwestern’s Chicago campus with intensivepre-departure coursework in community development and international leadership. Students then venture abroad to intern in interdisciplinary teams of four to five at community-based nonprofits in Bolivia, India, Nicaragua, or Uganda. At the end of the summer, students from all four sites return to Chicago for a Final Learning Summit, where they share geographical experiences, reflect on their learning, and explore how to transform their GESI summer into a lifetime of global engagement. Students receive two credits (equivalent to six semester hours) from Northwestern upon completion.”

The deadline for non-Northwestern Students is April 1st.

"I hope you are enjoying the end of the summer and all is well with you. If you
have just come to the U.S.A, or to Minnesota, I can imagine it has been quite
an adjustment as you begin the challenge of a new academic and social
environment and miss seeing family and friends.

I work in partnership with several Christian based organizations and volunteers
that help international students, scholars and families (regardless of their
religious beliefs) feel welcomed here in the U.S.A. and assist them in settling
in at colleges and universities in the Twin Cities. I am particularly
interested in seeing that African/African Descent students, scholars, spouses,
and their children receive the help they need, are well oriented and informed
about opportunities available to them on the campus and in the community and
know where they can feel comfortable seeking practical and confidential help
and encouragement when needed.

Some of the areas we provide services in or might be able to help you include:

finding resources (sorry, not money, but food you like, winter clothes,
furniture, transportation, etc)


learning to navigate the system at the U, in Minnesota and in the U.S.A.


learning about American life, education, culture and customs.

meeting new American and African/African Descent friends and families at the U
and in the Twin Cities.

Finding activities for your child(ren) and/or spouse and discussing concerns
about their adjustment here.


Participating in Free English classes, and free or inexpensive outings, trips,
activities, concerts, plays etc with American volunteers and internationals
from other countries.


Opportunities to visit a church to observe or participate in services, ask
questions and discuss spiritual topics with others from the same or different

A Few Words from the President and Vice President

It is a firm belief of mine that as Africans, we have a rich heritage in culture and traditions. It is my desire to showcase the diverse culture and traditions that both separate one African from another and yet join us to make us one. This years ASA will focus on the political issues plaguing the African continent, it will be a fountain of knowledge as well as a social place where Africans can gather to listen to African music and get to know one another on campus. It is our job to create a love for Africa, first in ourselves, and then to the rest of the world.

This school year my primary focus is to strengthen the relations between African students and students of the African Diaspora. In addition, I would also like to increase the awareness of African issues on campus, provide career and leadership opportunities to our members, and strengthen ties between students, alumni, and African business professionals. If you have never joined ASA, this is the year to do so because we are taking OVER!
